Magazine Analysis - Empire (The Hunger Games)

On this cover the colour scheme is red and white. The red is a feature colour used on titles, it comes across as an aggressive colour.

The central image on the cover is the main character 'Katniss Everden' who is a well-known figure from the franchise because of this I think it would be very eye catching. The character appears to be in front of a background which is a derelict area with broken buildings and fire, this could be viewed as being quite intimidating. The character also appears to be in black protective clothing with her hair in a braid which would go against stereotypes of females being vain when it comes to their appearances.

The fact that she is also holding a weapon goes against stereotypes of females being weak as she is the only character on the cover it shows that she is one of the strongest and most important characters in the franchise. I think the front cover of this magazine is very overcrowded and it has a lot going on at once, this is something I would like to try and avoid when I come to do my magazine cover as I don't like the way it looks.

Poster Analysis - The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015)

Image result for the diary of a teenage girl teaser poster

This poster introduces the main characters by having them sit on a sofa along the bottom of the poster. I think the audience is engaged by the characters as they are looking directly at the audience, I also think that it hints at what could happen in the movie as there appears to be tension between the 3 people.

In the centre of the poster is the title of the movie which is in a font which resembles a type writer. The fact that title is the central image make sit very eye catching and is something that i would like to try and include in my poster. I think this is very fitting as the movie is set in the 1970's so i think it matches that time era. The background wallpaper also matches the time era as well as the clothing the characters are in.

Across the bottom of the poster it features the Sundance Festival logo which I think is something that is attention grabbing and may make an audience want to see the movie more.

Magazine Analysis - Empire (Suicide Squad)

On this magazine front cover the central image is one of the featured characters called 'Harley Quinn' considering that she is a well known character in the DC Universe I think that making her the main focus was defiantly a good idea as it immediately grabs the attention of the audience whether they are fans of DC or not.

I think that the magazine front cover is also eye catching because of the bright colour scheme used. There is a pink and blue hue effect put over the background of the magazine which matches the dripping makeup on the characters face. The colour of the titles also match this colour scheme by using pink and white writing this gives the magazine cover a very professional look.

The titles are also placed at the top and bottom of the magazine front cover which allows the character features to stay as the main focus. There is a lot more text to the photo but it doesn't take away from the impact of the central image.

The character appears to be holding a gun and a baseball bat which gives of a threatening vibe and makes the smile on her face almost look manic. The fact that it is a female character holding the weapons contradicts stereotypes of females being weak. Her outfit seems to be tight fitting which may intrigue a male audience but females might find it empowering as she is in a revealing outfit but it is not the main aspect of the character. The characters body seems to be facing away from the camera whilst she is maintaining eye contact with the camera.

Looking at Empire magazine cover for Suicide Squad allowed me to see how the standard design can be adapted for the aesthetic of the movie. This is something I may try to include on my magazine cover if I chose to use Empire as my magazine.

Diary Entry 3

In today's lesson we continued with our short film did more editing. We stayed behind after the lesson to finish editing the short film. In this time period we managed to complete the film and we then uploaded it on to YouTube so we could access the video and embed into a blog post.

Imaginary Friend - Short Film

This is our short film in which we practised different types of camera angles, movements and shots. I think this will help when I come to film my trailer as I am now more experienced with using the camera and tripod. This will also help when I come to plan my trailer as it allows me to explore a variety of shots I can include in my trailer.

Diary Entry 2

For this lesson we were allowed to go out of the classroom and continue filming for our practise work. Unfortunately my groups camera died shortly after leaving the classroom. We managed to film a couple of shots for our work but when we looked back at the footage on the shots they were all to shaky to include in the final edit of the film. We decided to stay in the editing suite and practise editing footage and finding out other features we could include.

Diary Entry 1

Today we were discussing what we could do to prepare for our filming of our trailer. We were set the task of filming a short film that doesn't have a narrative so we could practise our camera skills. We were given a list of a different range of camera angles, shots and movements we have to include in our work.

Angle: high angle, low angle, canted angle
Shots: establishing shot, close-up, mid-shot, long-shot, wide shot, two-shot, aerial shot, point of view shot, over the shoulder shot.
Movement: pan, tilt, track, dolly, crane, zoom, reverse zoom.

In this lesson we went outside to start on the short films but my group came across difficulties with the tripod and camera so we spent some time learning how to use the equipment so when it came to our actual trailers we wouldn't have any problems.

Trailer Sound Analysis - Sully (2016)

The trailer opens with music from a piano and violins being played over the top of various scenes, it is a non-diegetic sound which helps link together various segments of the trailer. This background music is used throughout the trailer and is used to help create a tense atmosphere in more climactic parts of the trailer.

From the establishing shot of the sky line a sound bridge is used to help transition the shot into what appear to be flashback in which the audience can hear panicked screams. This mixed with the low lighting used and fast pace of this scene help create a sense of disorientation.

When beginning to look at sound used in trailers looking at Sully allowed me to understand how quickly the sound can change depending on the atmosphere the director is wanting to put across. This is something I would want to include in my final trailer as I think it helps with conveying a story line to an audience.

Poster Analysis - The Breakfast Club (1985)

In this poster the audience is introduced to the main characters of the movie as they are the main focus on the poster. The group of teenagers are shown as having very different styles and from this you can assume that they have different personalities as well. So the attention is only on the group of teenagers they are placed on a very soft gradient background.

At the top of the poster is a phrase that read 'They only met once, but their lives changed forever' this would suggest that the film follows the stereotypes of Coming of Age Dramas as it hints that the characters change and develop as the movie goes on. The paragraphs underneath allow the audience to start to understand the characters as they have all been given labels form which you can guess what their personalities and traits will be like.

At the bottom of the poster you can see that the movie has been rated R, because it depicts people smoking marijuana. This follows the stereotype of coming of age dramas as a narrative point most of the movies in this genre use is the use of drugs.

I like the bold phrase at the top of the poster as it grabs your attention, if I decided to make a Theatrical poster for my trailer this is a feature I would try and include as I think it helps engage the audience.

Poster Analysis - Juno (2007)

This poster shows what the main focus of the movie will be, it does this by putting all the writing on the baby bump shown which means all the attention is drawn towards it. The fact that they used the phrase 'Due this holiday season' also shows that a pregnancy is the main feature of the movie.

The main colour on the poster is orange which is a vibrant and joyful colour. It shows that someone of a young age is going to be in the movie as it is a bright colour which could be associated with happiness and joy, and is not a as aggressive as the colour red. The orange stand outs even more as the rest of the colours used on the poster are neutral shades such as grey and white.

This poster also begins to introduce you to the main character as the name tag reads ' Hello my name is Juno' this shows that 'Juno' is going to be the main protagonist of the movie as the title is named after the character and is one of the only main features on the teaser poster so it holds an importance.

I like this poster as I think it is clever as it is simplistic but it still hints at a lot of what the movie holds. I also like the fact that there is only one main feature colour while the others are neutral,I think that is something which I might try to include in my poster.
